Well Decommissioning

Alongside our installation services, we are fully equipped to decommission boreholes in accordance with SEPA and Environment Agency guidance (Good practice for decommissioning redundant boreholes and wells, 2012) across the UK.

The main reasons for decommissioning a well;

Prevent contamination: Properly sealing a well prevents pollutants from entering groundwater and protects nearby water supplies.

Ground Gas Pathways: Unsealed wells may present a key pathway for migration of ground gas including from former mine workings.

Safety: Unused or abandoned wells can collapse or pose physical hazards to people, animals, and equipment.

Regulatory compliance: Environmental agencies and local authorities require unused wells to be decommissioned to maintain groundwater protection standards and reduce risks to future site users.

Maintain site integrity: Decommissioning avoids future issues during construction, land development, or environmental assessments.

Avoid cross-connection risks: Old wells can create pathways that allow water to move between different geological layers, potentially spreading contamination.
